5 Fun Things to Do in Virginia Beach with the Whole Family
Virginia Beach is an excellent east coast family destination - if you’re moving there or just visiting.
With lots to do around the water and even more attractions to see inland, Virginia Beach is one of the coastal hubs for fun and recreation. It's got a little something for everyone, but it really is a place that you can bring your kids for a bit of family time.
1. Military Aviation Museum
Virginia Beach is home to Oceana Naval Air Station. If you're lucky enough to see the fighter pilots out on practice runs, then that's attraction enough.
But if you haven't gotten enough of these incredible feats of engineering, take a trip to the Military Aviation Museum. It's got hangars full of WWI and WWII planes, along with air shows and aircraft rides. As long as you don't have a fear of heights, you can experience an unforgettable ride.
2. Bike on the Trails
Virginia Beach is a cyclist's dream. Two hundred miles of bike-friendly trails cut through a variety of landscapes in Virginia Beach, making no two biking experiences the same. From the boardwalk to the forests, the bike trails are a refreshing way to enjoy the area.
3. Hike Through the Wilderness
Take a long hike through First Landing State Park, which offers nearly 3,000 acres of salt marsh, forested dunes, cypress swamps, and wetlands. You'll almost certainly see some wildlife, and there are even campgrounds, allowing you to spend the night if you wish.
After all of that biking and hiking, you can always go to the boardwalk and relax.
4. Dolphin and Whale Watching
While First Landing State Park has lots of animals and birds to gaze at, it's nothing compared to the dolphin and whale watching tours that you can hop on. Multiple tours are available. In fact, the winter months are best for whale watching since that’s when the humpback and fin whales migrate through the area.
5. Virginia Aquarium
Alas, if you don't see any dolphins or whales, you can always take solace in the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center. The main focus at this museum is the diverse aquatic wildlife found in the state of Virginia. It's got hundreds of great exhibits, an IMAX theatre, and touch tanks.
If that's not enough to tire out the kids, take them out to the aquarium’s adventure park where they'll find treetop trails, ziplines, swinging bridges, and a unique labyrinth to explore.
