Winter In Virginia: 5 of the Best Things to Do in Virginia Beach

What is there to do in Virginia Beach in the winter? The answer is - plenty! Even when the tourist season is over.

1. Winter Wildlife Boat Trip

Sponsored by the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center, this wildlife watching boat trip takes you up close to nature.

See humpback and fin whales as they migrate, but brown pelicans, northern gannets, double-crested cormorants and other sea birds also make an appearance as they feed on the ocean fish.

2. Horseback Riding on the Beach

From September through May, you can take a guided horseback ride along the beach. Enjoy strolling on the sand for thirty minutes or an hour with Virginia Beach Horseback tours. This is a great way to take in the beautiful ocean views.

Horseback riding is offered Thursday through Monday during the winter months.

3. Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center

You'll see more than 300 species of fish and marine animals at the aquarium. Get up close and personal with sharks, otters, rays, seals, turtles, and more.

There is also a 6-story National Geographic 3D theater offering many educational programs where kids will learn about wildlife through 3D graphics.

4. The Annual Polar Plunge

If you're the daredevil type, the Polar Plunge might be right up your alley. It takes place every February. This great event benefits the Special Olympics Virginia.

This year's festival begins with the SunTrust Dash & Splash Challenge, which includes a 4-mile or 1-mile run on the boardwalk. Runners, walkers, and strollers are encouraged to participate.

Join in on the fun with a costume for the costume contest and boardwalk parade if you're not inclined to jump in the chilly waters of the Atlantic.

5. Chesapeake Bay Distillery

For the 21 and over the crowd, a visit to the Chesapeake Bay Distillery is a great way to spend part of the day. It's located in the ViBe District, the artsy part of town.

Visit their vodka tasting room and sip some unique craft vodkas like Ghost Pepper Infused Vodka. Tastings are $7 and are limited to one per day.
