James Hunter and his wife, Lizzie, had three children–Harriet, James, and Eloise–all of whom lived in the Hunter home for the rest of their lives. The family was very active in the Chesapeake community. While James passed away in 1940, Harriet and Eloise remained active in the area until their deaths decades later. Walk through the Hunter House museum to get a sense of what life was like for the Hunter family. Explore the furniture and decor, which has remained unchanged for the past 135 years. The museum is open Wednesday through Saturday, April through September, and reservations are required for admission.

4. Fun Forest–900 City Park Drive, Chesapeake, VA 23320

Ready for your little ones to run off some pent-up energy? Kids love Fun Forest, a large playground that's a joy for kids of all ages. A three-way underground telephone makes it fun for kids to experiment with communication from opposite ends of the park, while a dolphin tunnel slide brings the thrills for elementary school kids. This large park is named for the lock separating the saltwater of the Elizabeth River from the freshwater of the Chesapeake and Albemarle Canals. Park visitors can enjoy the beautiful waterside views and a walk along a raised area that provides a stellar view of yachts and other boats cruising along the waterways.
